A CLASSROOM EXPERIMENT ON OLIGOPOLIES AgEcon
Nelson, Robert G.; Beil, Richard O., Jr..
This experiment demonstrates principles of decision-making in dynamic oligopolies, especially the difficulties in forming and maintaining cartels. As an illustration of firm behavior under imperfect competition, the game distinguishes between procedurally rational choices and substantively rational decisions in the context of collusive, Cournot, and competitive equilibria. The paper discusses results from an actual classroom exercise and suggests some additional variations in institutional details. Instructions for students and a spreadsheet program for producing payoff tables are provided in the appendices.

A practical approach to the understanding and teaching of RNA silencing in plants Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Bazzini,Ariel A; Mongelli,Vanesa C; Hopp,H. Esteban; del Vas,Mariana; Asurmendi,Sebastián.
Gene silencing, also called RNA interference (RNAi) is a specific mechanism of RNA degradation involved in gene regulation, development and defense in eukaryotic organisms. It became an important subject in the teaching programs of molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology courses in the last years. The aim of this work is to provide simple and inexpensive assays to understand and teach gene silencing using plants as model systems. The use of transient and permanent transgenic plants for expressing reporter genes, like those derived from jellyfish green fluorescent protein (gfp) encoding gene, provides a nice, colorful and conclusive image of gene silencing. Three experimental approaches to evidence RNA silencing are depicted. In the first approach...

Design and Management of Teaching Programs With Survival In Mind AgEcon
Connor, Larry J..
Agricultural economics teaching programs are becoming stressed. They vary considerably because of different institutional settings and are conducted under changing college, university, and department trends and paradigm shifts. To ensure success, strategic marketing processes need to be used in analyzing programs: identifying potential students (clientele or customers), ascertaining what to offer (majors, minors, service courses, enrichment options, and distance education), finalizing the strategic plan, and executing the plan (with students, administration, industry, and disciplinary peers). Conclusions and recommendations for enhancing teaching quantity and quality are presented for the strategic marketing processes. Finally, some implications and...

Dollar Enterprise – Integrating Experiential Leaning in Teaching Community Entrepreneurship AgEcon
Liang, Chyi-Lyi (Kathleen).
Everybody has had dreams. Some of the dream ideas have the potential to be developed into successful enterprise concepts (for commercial enterprises or non-profit organizations), if we know how to proceed to prepare for success and failure. Unfortunately sometimes a dream idea can also become a nightmare for people who do not have adequate skills and knowledge to capitalize on opportunities. Being an entrepreneur does not imply one must own a business. Those who have dreamed about being their own boss one day, always wonder what it would be like to actually start and run their own business. Dollar Enterprise, an integrated and unique activity offered by the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics through a course “Introduction to...

The search for learning, based on the development of professional competencies in a global context, and the different ways students react to different teaching techniques in continuing education, requires universities to change and innovate (including new methods) in order to develop professionals who are able to exercise their calling in a changing and competitive scenario. This study innovates by creating access for veterinary students (via the Web) to the body of veterinary morphology work, including body painting, images of resin animals, games, quizzes, video classes, and the association of anatomy with radiographic images. Preliminary results indicate that material presented in this way increases interest, thus stimulating integrated and...

Enhancing Critical Thinking in Economics Using Team-Based Learning AgEcon
Espey, Molly.
While critical thinking may be difficult to define, development of critical thinking skills is a principle goal of education, particularly higher education. It is vital that college graduates can question assumptions, synthesize information, evaluate evidence, draw inferences, and make reasoned arguments. Critical thinking skills do not improve without practice; effective teaching methods engage students with course material and each other, challenging them to think through issues and problems relevant to the real world. Engagement or problem solving alone, however, does not guarantee improved critical thinking. This study evaluates the impact of one alternative teaching method, team-based learning, on students’ perceptions of the development of...

Enhancing Learning in the Classroom – One Click @ a Time AgEcon
Nelson, A. Gene; Litzenberg, Kerry K..
The effectiveness of Personal Response System (PRS) technology, sometimes called clickers, in engaging millennial students in more active learning is evaluated using pre-use and post-use surveys in three undergraduate agricultural economics courses with a total of 300 students. A PRS allows students to respond to their instructor’s questions and receive immediate feedback. The expectations of millennial students are described, along with the reasons why faculty might be interested in this technology. The survey results encouraged the authors to continue to develop their skills in posing questions and evaluating student responses using clickers.

Ethics and Agriculture: A Teaching Perspective AgEcon
Diebel, Penelope L..
Ethics and agriculture is a complex debate, but one in which agricultural economics students must be prepared to participate. There are many links between economics and ethic or moral philosophy. Classroom teaching tends to focus on discussion of issues involving behavioral ethics and disregards the teaching of philosophical ethics and its application in agricultural economics. A discussion is presented regarding the ethical context we have inherited in agricultural economics. I offer some broad moral philosophy concepts and an argument for providing students with tools to develop a philosophical ethics perspective of agricultural economics.

HOW AN ONLINE COURSE COMPARES AgEcon
Wachenheim, Cheryl J..
Student satisfaction with and performance in an online agrisales course is compared with that of students enrolled in a simultaneously-taught classroom course. Assessment tools are developed for both sections. Online and classroom students were equally satisfied with the course and the instructor using most measures, but had different motives for course enrollment. Overall student performance did not differ. However, online students tended to do better on exams and homework assignments while classroom students demonstrated a greater ability to apply course concepts to a practical setting. Results suggest instructors be well-prepared to handle unique learner situations prior to marketing an online course and work to ensure students are motivated to...

Integrating Research and Education AgEcon
Schroeder, Ted C..
University faculty have numerous responsibilities, but development of our own and our students’ human capital is our primary job. To effectively develop human capital of others requires investing heavily in our own capital. This includes being actively involved in discovering knowledge. In addition, as agricultural economists, our clientele demand relevant research output which requires regularly informing them about our research. Conducting research, publishing and communicating findings to interested parties better equips us to provide a quality teaching program. This article presents an accumulation of evidence supporting this view and provides insights about how these activities might be integrated.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR AGRICULTURAL ECONOMISTS AT NON-LAND GRANT COLLEGES: RESULTS OF A SURVEY AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Lovejoy, Stephen B..
This paper provides information about the nonagricultural academic job market to students and administrators in Agricultural Economics departments. Particularly, we report the results of a survey sent to 295 non-Land Grant economics departments which met our criteria of offering only a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Of the 101 returned surveys, 45% indicated that they would consider hiring an Agricultural Economist to fill a faculty position within their department. These schools indicated that they place greater value on teaching-related experiences than research publications in prospective faculty members. We propose the implementation of mentoring programs within Agricultural Economics departments. Such programs would allow students to learn...

Knowledge about and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among pre-service teachers: a comparative study of Turkey and Slovenia Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Sorgo,Andrej; Ambrozic-Dolinsek,Jana; Usak,Muhammet; Özel,Murat.
Genetically modified organisms cannot be regarded as merely a topic for academic debate, since these have serious implications as a research field and for production based on genetic engineering. Public debates rarely base their arguments on elements rooted in scientific arguments and knowledge but are heavily loaded with emotions, opinions and informal reasoning. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and acceptance of genetically modified organisms among prospective teachers in Slovenia and Turkey. Knowledge of genetic modification was measured with a two-tier instrument. The level of acceptance of genetic modification was measured with a 17-item instrument. Findings revealed that knowledge of genetics and biotechnology barely influenced the...

Learning Surgical Anatomy in the Field of Microsurgical Reconstructive Surgery: A new Pedagogic Method on Human Fresh Cadavers International Journal of Morphology
Laroche,Carine; Vacher,Christian.
Microsurgical vascular anastomosis in reconstructive surgery learning is usually based on rat dissection. But this technique does not allow dissection of the flap, preparing of the recipient vessels training, and suturing in conditions as realistic as possible of the surgery. The aim of this study was to describe a technique of surgical anatomy learning on human fresh cadavers, easy to perform and to evaluate its pedagogic interest. In the first part of the study, six fresh cadavers have been dissected simulating 6 forearm flaps with growing difficulty. In the second part of the study, 30 residents in surgery were evaluated on their ability to recognize main anatomic structures and to perform microsurgical anastomosis, of forearm flaps anastomosed on...
